You do not need a referral from a GP to access psychological services, however you will not be able to access a rebate under Medicare without it!
… Please note a Mental Health Care Plan is required for the Medicare rebate to apply.
The recommended rate by the Australian Psychological Society is $222 per hour; however my usual rate is $180 per hour.
Mental Health Care Plan (Medicare) rebates apply with G.P. referral. This means that if you have been referred by your GP, Medicare will refund you $84.80.
If you are the holder of a Government issued Health Care Card I may be able to’ bulk bill’ Medicare meaning you won’t have any out of pocket expenses to pay. Bulk Billing is limited.
You could also ask your GP to send your Mental Heath Care Plan to Artius who administer ATAPS funding as part of the Primary Health Network. If are able to access services under ATAPS you will not incur any out of pocket expenses. Please note – Ask your GP to list me as your preferred provider if you wish to receive services from me.
You may also be able to claim a rebate from your private health care fund if you are covered for psychological services – please check with your health fund. A referral from your GP is NOT required if you plan to claim through your private health care fund.
Please note that you cannot make a claim through your private health care fund if you have made a claim through Medicare. However if you have used your Medicare sessions for the year (10), you might then wish to access your private health care rebates.
Please provide at least 48 hours notice of cancellations to avoid a 50% cancellation fee. Appointments cancelled with less than 24 hours notice will incur the full fee as recommended.
You must be referred by your GP, your psychiatrist or pediatrician. Your GP will need to complete a detailed mental health assessment and prepare a Mental Health Care Plan before referring you to a psychologist. You should book a longer session with your GP to enable time for this.
